For those of you who know little about it, the Eurovision Song Contest is an annual glitz spectacular with cheesy songs, hideous costumes, kitsch choreography, and, hopefully, a timeless classic new song to become a global smash. Abba was discovered this way back in 1974 with “Waterloo.” it’s also the most watched television show on the planet, with approximately 200 million viewers globally each May. it’s bigger than the Oscars & bigger than the Super Bowl. it also has a huge gay following, especially in Europe. Back in the early 2000s, in the dark days before Youtube, I brought 1975 Dutch winner by rock group Teach-In to performance group, The Dumpsta Players, for parody. “Ding-A-Dong” featured Jenn all dressed up as Miss Piggy, Crystal and Linda on back-up dancing, and a tacky 70s polyester dress to boot! There’s nothing quite as charming as the permanently etched image of them dancing their hearts out in a show themed as children’s TV characters fallen on hard times, “Sesamean Streets.” This is just some of the many memory miracles I have Mikko to thank for. Kiitos, Mikko!
