it was always a battle between my little brother and I. He wanted to watch reruns of “Hogan’s Heroes” and I wanted to watch “Solid Gold.” Why didn’t he understand that in this week’s Top 10 Darcel & Coolie were backing up the one and only Melissa Manchester on her gay camp classic, “You Should Hear How She Talks About You”! I had to see it! Luckily, I got my sister to side with me and my brother was outvoted. The countdown was up to #7, Air Supply, and then 6 was “Eye In The Sky” and, suddenly, Melissa was on stage dancing to #5! Now, this is before Madonna and most singer songwriters stayed behind the piano, but Melissa was bravely center stage moving with the Solid Gold Dancers! It was a left kick, and heal ball change, right kick, step forward, and do it again. Instantly, we were up in front of the TV practicing those steps. My brother left the room in disgust. I had such an urge to perform that I would have given anything to be a Solid Gold dancer. That week I auditioned for the spring musical and was cast as the Scarecrow in “The Wizard of Oz”! A star was born 😉
