Oh, Charlene, the first time I heard that infamous monologue-bridge to that song, I nearly plotzed from laughing! “Do you know what paradise is? It’s a lie! A fantasy we create about people and places as we’d like them to be. But do you know what truth is? It’s that little baby you’re holding and it’s that man you fought with this morning the same one you’re going to make love to tonight! That’s truth! That’s love!” So, when the drag queens are all comparing notes on which songs make the best tips, this one, along with that Dreamgirls song, are right at the top of the list! And that was long before it was featured in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. On reflection—I do have to wonder—how did this song become such a big hit? Was it the gays that pushed it up the charts? One will never know, but I was lucky enough to see Ian perform this with The Dumpsta Players many moons ago and, I gotta say, that gurl has been “undressed by kings and a thousand things a woman ain’t supposed to see”! So, hats off to Ian—a drag memory that is permanently etched on my mind.
